Malibu Moon Filly Fastest at OBS Under Tack Session

A Malibu Moon   filly from Eddie Woods' consignment clocked the fastest quarter-mile in :20 4/5 during the April 19 third session of the under tack show in preparation for the Ocala Breeders' Sales spring 2-year-olds in training sale.

The sale at the OBS headquarters in Ocala, Fla., is scheduled for April 25-28 with daily sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT.

Consigned as Hip 591, the Malibu Moon filly was produced from In the Slips, a daughter of More Than Ready   who was a stakes winner and graded stakes-placed at Santa Anita Park. She descends from the female family of group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues.

"We expected her to work good and she did," Woods said of the filly purchased by the Oak Farm partnership for $47,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale, after previously selling for $220,000 as a weanling. "She is a really beautiful, tall, elegant filly with lots of leg underneath her, and she is by a great filly sire."

Three 2-year-olds shared the fastest eighth-mile time of :09 4/5 as the under tack show went over the mid-point. On a warm, cloudy day with a slight breeze, the sale entrants worked over the OBS artificial track surface.

Consigned by de Meric Sales, Hip 422 is a Quality Road   filly produced from the unraced Tiznow   mare Favoritism, a half sister to the dam of Japanese group 1 winner Moanin. The filly was acquired by Secure Investments for $25,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

"We weren’t surprised," Tristan de Meric said of the filly's work. "We have had her on our farm since January and she is a really nice filly. We sold her half sister (Lindeza) for $500,000 as a 2-year-old in 2015."

Also breezing in :09 4/5 was Hip 581, a First Samurai   colt from Grassroots Training and Sales. Produced from the unraced Indian Charlie mare Indian Bay, the colt's second dam is grade 3 winner By the Barrel, the dam of multiple graded-placed Mise En Rose. The colt was acquired by Grassroots for $90,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

"He has been an outstanding horse since we got him," said Grassroots' Jody Mihalic. "He's been (fast) from day one."

The other co-fastest worker on the day was Hip 504, a Florida-bred filly from the first crop of Prospective   consigned by Daylight Farm Racing and Sales. The filly is out of Grand Episode, an unraced Grand Slam mare who is from the female family of champion and sire Street Sense  .

The under tack workouts continue through April 22, beginning at 8 a.m. EDT daily.
