Union Rags Colt Hits for New Partnership Group

A new pinhooking partnership group made a big hit at the April 27 session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales spring 2-year-olds in training sale, where a Union Rags   colt was sold for $1 million, a tie for the second-highest price of the sale.

The colt consigned by Paul Sharp, agent, was purchased by Red Barons Barn and Rancho Temescal, with trainer Jeff Mullins signing the sale receipt.

Bred in Kentucky by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm, the colt was produced from the A.P. Indy mare Poco Mas. He is a half brother to Argentine group 2 winner Carinosa. His second dam, the Strawberry Road mare Adel, won the Edgewood Stakes and finished second in the 1998 Del Mar Oaks (G1T). She is the dam of five winners, including Canadian champion Interpol and stakes winner Forestry Type.

Mullins said the colt looks as if he could be a classic-type horse.

“He is just a big nice colt, who looks like the type who can get you to the first weekend in May,” he said. “He breezed nice and is a nice individual.”

The seven-figure price is a big return on the $60,000 paid by Sharp and Crow when they bought the colt from Lane's End, agent for Mt. Brilliant Farm, at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Liz Crow said the colt is owned by a partnership she and Sharp formed last year consisting of 11 people. The partners purchased nine horses for a total $600,000. Two were sold in March and they have a Dialed In   colt consigned  to the OBS spring final session April 28.

“We’re ahead of the game and thrilled about it,” Crow said. “The stars aligned.”

Crow said that in February the colt appeared to be the best horse in the group “and he just kept getting better. He really turned a corner about a month ago. He’s just a classy, nice horse and we really think he will be a two-turn horse.”
