Churchill Downs Inc. has purchased advance-deposit wagering site BetAmerica, multiple sources from both companies said April 28 and 29.

Sources from both sides were unwilling to go on record as of Saturday morning, and requests for comment from both companies were declined or unanswered. CDI also owns ADW TwinSpires.

In December BetAmerica lost the Thoroughbred Owners of California's permission to offer wagering on California races to California residents, along with fellow ADW Watch and Wager.

Earlier in December The Stronach Group's Scott Daruty—The Stronach Group owns ADW Xpressbet—expressed to the California Horse Racing Board a desire to "limit" ADWs in California by cutting out BetAmerica and Watch and Wager.

The TOC cited ADW geolocation requirements—which BetAmerica opposed—as the reason for cutting BetAmerica and Watch and Wager, but TOC-approved ADWs (Xpressbet, TVG, TwinSpires, and NYRA Bets) operated without geolocation services enabled until late March or early April.

How and if BetAmerica will move forward as an ADW platform, and whether its California customers will be allowed to wager on California races in the future, is unclear.
