Grade I winner Sea Calisi will try to win the $200,000 Sheepshead Bay Stakes (G2T) a second straight year when she faces an expected six other fillies and mares, including Suffused, in the 1 3/8-mile turf test May 6 at Belmont Park.
Saturday's race will mark the seasonal debut for Martin Schwartz's Sea Calisi, who also opened her 4-year-old season in last year's Sheepshead Bay, where the daughter of Youmzain earned a 2 1/2-length victory. That race was her North American debut, and she went on to win the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) last summer for her trainer Chad Brown.
Brown will try to earn his third straight Sheepshead Bay victory as he won the 2015 edition with Rosalind.
While 8-5 morning-line favorite Sea Calisi will be making her seasonal debut, Juddmonte Farms homebred Suffused will try for her third graded stakes win in as many starts this season after taking the La Prevoyante and The Very One stakes (both G3T) at Gulfstream Park. The 5-year-old daughter of Champs Elysees is trained by Racing Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who has won the Sheepshead Bay four previous times, most recently in 2014 with Juddmonte's Riposte.
