Zenyatta foaled a Medaglia d'Oro filly May 9 at Lane's End Farm

Zenyatta, champion older mare from 2008-10 and the 2010 Horse of the Year in North America, gave birth to a filly by Medaglia d'Oro   just before 9 p.m. ET May 9 at Will Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Zenyatta, who won the first 19 races in her career before losing the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) by a head to champion Blame  , is the only female to have won the Classic, which she accomplished in 2009. She earned $7.3 million at the races and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility last year.

Zenyatta has had two of her offspring make it to the races. Cozmic One, a colt by Bernardini  , failed to place in two starts. Ziconic, a 4-year-old Tapit   colt, is winless in six tries, with one second and three thirds, good for $35,200 to date.

In both 2014 and 2016, Zenyatta's foals by War Front   died.

Bred by Eric Kronfeld's Maverick Production, Zenyatta captured the imagination of racing fans everywhere with her stirring rallies from the clouds, and with her routine of scraping the ground with her front leg in the paddock before her races. Owners Jerry and Ann Moss have showcased Zenyatta and raised monies for various charities through allowing people to visit with the larger-than-life mare.

Jerry Moss, at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) with his contender Gormley last week, said he was considering not breeding Zenyatta back this year given the relatively late date of her foaling.
