Lot 35, a Street Sense colt purchased by Kerri Radcliffe for Phoenix Thoroughbreds
A Street Sense colt purchased at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale for $15,000 lit up the bid board during the May 12 Arqana breeze up sale in France, selling for a sale record €1.4 million (US$1,521,660).
Consigned by Mocklershill, the colt was purchased by Kerri Radcliffe on behalf of Phoenix Thoroughbreds and will be trained in England by the agent's husband, Jeremy Noseda.
"I've been to every breeze up sale in the world this year and this is the nicest horse I've seen," said Radcliffe, who has been an active buyer at the 2-year-olds in training sales, the U.S. equivalent to breeze up sales.
Bred in Kentucky by Godolphin, the April 13, 2015 colt is out of the Seattle Slew mare Mystic Melody, a stakes winner in France who was multiple group-placed and is a half sister to Travers and Woodward stakes (both G1) winner and stallion Alpha . The colt descends from the female family of U.S. champion Golden Attraction, Canadian champions Kamar and Key to the Moon, three-time grade 1 winner Gorgeous, Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Seaside Attraction, and Florida Derby (G1) winner Cape Town, among others.
Offered by Brookdale Sales at Keeneland, the colt was acquired by Jim McCartan's MC Bloodstock for $15,000.
The sale-topper fueled a robust market that produced gains in every statistical category.
Arqana reported 94 of 124 head offered (75.8% clearance rate) were sold for an aggregate €12,948,000 (US$14,073,000), compared with the €10,466,500 total a year ago when 95 of 115 (82.6%) were sold. This year's average was €137,745 (US$149,715) and median was €82,500 (US$89,669), up over the respective €110,174 and €67,000 figures of a year ago.
