Hip 77, a Sky Mesa colt, breezed a quarter-mile in :21 3/5

A son of Sky Mesa   breezed a quarter-mile in :21 3/5, the fastest time at the distance during the May 15 under-tack preview for the upcoming Barretts' May 2-year-olds in training sale at Del Mar. Several horses also breezed an eighth-mile in :10 1/5, the fastest furlong time of the day.

"We had a wonderful preview at Del Mar with a good turnout," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. "The track was a little heavier because they've added material as part of the banking project to make the track consistent with Santa Anita. All the horses got hold of the track very well and looked good going over it. Everybody is going to like the track this summer at Del Mar."

Bar Diamond Ranch consigned the Sky Mesa colt, named Sharon's Fury. Listed as Hip 77 in the supplemental catalog, the youngster is out of the Touch Gold mare Gold Ring.

This year's sale, slated for May 17 beginning at 2 p.m. PDT, will likely be Barretts' final May 2-year-old sale.

The California-based sales company moved its 2-year-old sales from Pomona to Del Mar after Fairplex Park at Pomona closed its racetrack. Barretts' May sale occurs during the long-standing Del Mar National Horse Show, held in the arena adjacent to the sales ring.

For the past couple years, the horse show and sales company have co-existed in May. But Barretts officials have indicated that going forward, horses that used to sell in May will be offered at either its March 2-year-old sale or the July paddock horses of racing age sale, conducted during the Del Mar race meeting.

"We'll open up the March sale and those (horses) that are later developing can go into July," Lloyd said. "In 2018 what we're thinking of doing is previewing on the first dark Monday of the meet and then selling on the Wednesday after the races. That could kick off the second week of the meeting."

The May sale does have the advantage of entries that didn't sell elsewhere and several in the supplemental catalog were withdrawals from the Ocala Breeders' Sales' spring sale.

The supplemental catalog includes a Kentucky-bred filly by Bodemeister  —Small Kitchen, by Corinthian  , consigned to Barretts as Hip 78 by Raul Reyes' Kings Equine. In his first crop, Bodemeister sired Always Dreaming, winner of the 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) as well as American Anthem, who captured the Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park May 13.

The Bodemeister filly, purchased for $25,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale, was entered and withdrawn from the OBS spring 2-year-olds in training sale. She breezed an eighth-mile in :10 3/5 during the first set of the May 15 Barretts under tack preview.

Kings Equine also supplemented Hip 87, a Kentucky-bred son of Exchange Rate—Succession, by Groom Dancer to the sale. That colt was listed as not sold for $72,000 at the OBS spring sale and breezed an eighth-mile in :10 1/5, equalling the fastest time during the first set of the under tack preview.

A Kentucky-bred son of Jimmy Creed  —Persevere, by Southern Image  , was purchased at the OBS spring sale for $60,000. Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency is offering the colt as Hip 81 at Barretts.

The regular Barretts May catalog consists of 72 head. Bruno de Berdt's Excel Bloodstock has Hip 52, a Kentucky-bred son of Super Saver  —Wabash Moon, by Malibu Moon  . The colt was entered in the Barretts March sale, but was withdrawn. He was a $90,000 purchase by de Berdt out of the 2016 Keeneland fall yearling sale and worked the eighth-mile in :10 3/5 at Barretts.

Hip 46, a daughter of Street Sense   out of the A.P. Indy mare Sweet Thoughts, consigned by Kings Equine was a $12,000 purchase at Keeneland.

Cal-breds in the catalog include offspring by Lucky Pulpit  , Munnings  , and Animal Kingdom  .

Havens and Kim McCarthy's McCarthy Bloodstock each have a Lucky Pulpit juvenile entered. Havens' Lucky Pulpit colt, Hip 31, is named Restless Preacher and is out of the stakes-placed Restless Con mare Restless Appeal. He was bought for $35,000 at the Barretts January sale by John Brocklebank, agent. McCarthy's Lucky Pulpit filly, Hip 47, is named Church Team and is out of the Broken Vow   mare Team Builder. The filly breezed a furlong in :10 3/5 during the first set of 2-year-old working Monday.

McCarthy consigned Hip 57, a Cal-bred son of Animal Kingdom out of the stakes-placed Dixieland Band mare Bandora who was acquired for $45,000 at the 2016 Barretts October sale. The McCarthy consignment also includes Hip 15, Curlin's Journey, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Curlin  —Kiss My Swiss, by Swiss Yodeler.

Havens has an Animal Kingdom colt listed as Hip 61. A Kentucky-bred, the youngster is out of the stakes-placed Storm Cat mare Catstar. Havens also has the lone Munnings in the catalog, Hip 18, a Cal-bred out of the French Deputy mare La Treizieme.
