Curlin Colt Tops Midlantic Pinhook Prospects

A Curlin   colt who was one of the fastest workers during the under tack show is also the highest-priced previously purchased offering at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds as Hip 388, the chestnut colt was purchased by his consignor for $475,000 from St George Sales at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. Bred in Florida by Miller Racing, the colt is out of the winning Stormin Fever mare Franscat, who also produced two stakes winners and is from the family of grade 1 winner and sire Ogygian.

"We stretched on him because when we all saw him, we loved him," Randy Hartley said of the hefty yearling price tag for the colt, who breezed a :10 eighth-mile in preparation for the May 22-23 sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. Sessions begin at 11 a.m. daily.

Hartley and his partner Dean DeRenzo are also represented by the second-highest priced pinhook prospect, a Medaglia d'Oro   filly who went through the sale ring at this year's Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training at Gulfstream Park. Reported sold to Breeze Easy for $450,000, the filly consigned as Hip 136 was bred in Kentucky by Diamond A Racing and was initially bought by Hartley/DeRenzo for $310,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale.

Produced from an unraced Meadowlake mare, the filly is a half sister to grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie.

A $350,000 purchase by Grupo 7 C, Hip 490 is a Distorted Humor   half brother to grade 1 winner Lochte out of stakes winner Lemon Kiss, a full sister to multiple grade 3 winner Kiss the Kid. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Town & Country Farms, which purchased Lemon Kiss for $1.325 million from Hunter Valley Farm out of the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale while carrying the Distorted Humor colt.

Consignor Crupi's New Castle Farm went to $320,000 to acquire Hip 418, a More Than Ready   colt, out of the Taylor Made consignment to the 2015 Keeneland November sale. The colt bred in Kentucky by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding was produced from an unplaced half sister to six stakes winners, including grade 2 winners Ironicus and Norumbega.

Also from Crupi's consignment is Hip 427, a Bernardini   colt produced from $879,644-earner Hessonite, a daughter of Freud   whose 11 wins in 22 starts included the grade 3 Beaugay Stakes. Consigned to the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling sale, the colt bred in Kentucky by DATTT Farm was bought by Crupi for $310,000 from the Denali Stud consignment at Fasig-Tipon's Saratoga August sale.
