Group 1 winner The Party Stand topped the session at AU$1.1 million

Two mares in foal to Arrowfield Stud's leading sire Snitzel were the standouts during the second session of the 2017 Magic Millions national broodmare sale May 31 on Australia's Gold Coast.

Group 1 winner The Party Stand topped the session when she was knocked down to Adrian Nicoll of BBA Ireland for AU$1.1 million (US$818,928).

Winner of the group 1 Nicolas Feuillatte New Zealand Stakes, The Party Stand, by Thorn Park, is the dam of stakes-placed filly Petition, a member of the Freedman stable who was purchased as a yearling by Nicoll for AU$560,000 ($427,448).

"She was the one we wanted all week," Nicoll said. "She's a beautiful mare and she's in foal to the right horse."

The Party Stand was offered by Segenhoe Stud Australia on behalf of the Camilleri family's Fairway Thoroughbreds, which also is the breeder of turf superstar Winx.

The other mare in foal to Snitzel that proved popular Wednesday was Comprende, a group 3 winner bought by Widden Stud in partnership with David Lucas for AU$1.05 million ($781,704).

"We're thrilled to have her," Widden's Antony Thompson said of the daughter of I Am Invincible. "She's a queen. Physically she's beautiful."

Comprende was consigned by Willow Park Stud on behalf of Rod Menzies.

After the first two days of the four-day auction, the sale is rolling along well above last year's pace.

Magic Millions reported 490 horses have grossed AU$78,283,000 ($58,280,100), compared with the AU$51,959,500 paid for the 374 that changed hands during the first two sessions a year ago. The average price of AU$159,761 ($118,939) is well above the AU$138,929 figure at the same juncture a year ago.

"The market is holding strong and the clearance rate is about 86% and with the big numbers we're selling, everything is holding up," said Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox.

The sale continues Thursday at 10 a.m. AEST.
