After excursions to California and New York in his last two starts, Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman's Calgary Cat will return to the location of his last victory June 3 in the $175,000 Connaught Cup Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine.
The 2014 Canadian champion sprinter back in 2014, when he won the Bold Venture (G3) and Kennedy Road (G2) stakes, the now 7-year-old gelded son of Cowtown Cat won the Achievement Stakes and Nearctic Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine in 2016 before he shipped to Southern California for a run in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T).
LEWYN: Calgary Cat Up Late for Nearctic Surprise
He ran fourth in the Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park, then took the rest of the winter off before his 2017 debut in the Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont Park, where he finished sixth.
Calgary Cat will have to contend with four other graded winners in the Connaught Cup field, however, including speedy morning-line favorite Take the Stand, who last won the Muniz Memorial Handicap (G2T) in March of 2016 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, and 2016 Connaught Cup winner Dimension.
The other graded winners are Tower of Texas (2015 King Edward Stakes, G2T) and Glenville Gardens (2016 Play the King Stakes, G2T), who won the Nov. 6 Labeeb Stakes last time out at Woodbine to close his 4-year-old campaign.
