Schulace breaks his maiden under Rafael Bejarano

Schulace, a son of grade 1 winner Champ Pegasus, became his sire's first winner when he took a Santa Anita Park maiden special weight for California-bred or -sired 2-year-olds in his debut June 2.

The Richard Barton homebred broke third under Rafael Bejarano but gained the lead to set fractions of :22.29 and:46.36 through a half-mile, completing 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.68. Schulace, trained by Michael Machowsky, finished 3 3/4 lengths in front of runner-up Time for Cioppino. He is out of the Holy Bull mare Tillie Lou, who in 2016 produced a full sister and in 2017 foaled a full brother. Champ Pegasus stands for $5,000 at Legacy Ranch in California.

Friday was a busy day for freshmen sires, as Bind and Ez Effort were also represented by their first winners.

Bind's daughter Meter got the job done at Evangeline Downs, where she won a 4 1/2-furlong special weight for Louisiana-bred maiden 2-year-old fillies by five lengths. With Colby Hernandez in the irons, the Al Stall Jr. trainee dueled for the early lead through a :22.42 quarter and a :46.30 half. She easily cleared her rival in the turn and soared comfortably to the victory without being asked, finishing the distance in :52.64. Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider bred and own the filly, the first foal out of the War Front   mare Gauge. A full brother to Meter was born in 2016, and Gauge delivered a filly by Lea   this season. Bind stands for $1,500 at Red River Farms in Louisiana.

Ez Effort was represented by J. Loyd Yother, Kevin Eikleberry, William Matthews, and Martin Fleming's Fortified Effort, who won a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Prairie Meadows by three-quarters of a length. The Arizona-bred colt completed the distance in :52.94 after rallying with a four-wide trip under Ry Eikleberry for trainer Kevin Eikleberry. Fortified Effort was a $35,000 purchase by his connections from breeder Flemming Thoroughbred Farm's consignment to the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders' Association's 2016 fall mixed sale. He is out of the Gulch mare Shaky Canyon, whose last reported foal is a yearling filly by Ez Dreamer. Ez Effort stands at Fleming Thoroughbred Farm for a private fee.
