Trainer Chris Englehart celebrates his 4,000th victory
Trainer Chris Englehart reached 4,000 wins June 3, when Prince Supreme won the fifth race at Finger Lakes Racetrack.
In the 5 1/2-furlong claiming race, My Purple Haze Stables' 4-year-old gelded son of Alphabet Soup lead at every call against eight challengers. Under jockey John Davila Jr., Prince Supreme crossed the wire in a final time of 1:05.51, 2 1/4 lengths in front of favorite Cats Landing.
The win brought Englehart's earnings to more than $45 million from 17,982 starts. This year Englehart has 38 wins and $940,771 in earnings from 193 starts, which ranks him 65th by earnings in North America and gives him 20% winners from his starters.
Englehart began training in 1973 at Finger Lakes, where the 61-year-old has won 15 training titles, including 13 consecutive titles from 2003-15. According to the upstate New York track, Englehart registered 3,229 of his 4,000 wins at Finger Lakes and horses under his care have won 14 stakes there. One of his most successful runners was Frattare, who was owned and bred by his wife Sheila and won five stakes for the trainer at Finger Lakes.
The sport runs in the family, as Englehart's sons Jeremiah and Jeff, and his brother Steve, are also trainers.
