Midnight Lute, Midshipman Colts Work Fastest at OBS

A Midnight Lute   colt and a son of Midshipman   turned in the fastest eighth-mile and quarter-mile works, respectively, June 8 during the second session of the under tack show for the June 13-14 Ocala Breeders' Sales 2-year-old and horses in training sale.

Joining two juveniles from the first session to breeze a furlong in :09 4/5 was Hip 335, a Midnight Lute colt consigned by Timber Creek, agent. Bred in Kentucky by Randal Family Trust, the colt is out of the stakes-placed Giant's Causeway   mare Screen Giant. Screen Giant is a half sister to British group 3 winner Secret History and to Costume Designer, a stakes winner in Southern California. Third dam Lake Valley was a stakes winner who finished second in the Test Stakes (G1).

The colt was acquired by Jim Connors for $9,500 from Taylor Made Sales Agency at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale.

Eight juveniles breezed the second-fastest eighth of a mile time of :10 flat Thursday.

The Midshipman colt, offered as Hip 354 by Thoroughbred Champions Training Center, agent, tied four others from the Day 1 under tack session to breeze a quarter-mile in :20 3/5. Produced from the Nobiz Like Shobiz mare Shine a Spotlight, the chestnut colt bred in Kentucky by Elizabeth Jones Valando was purchased for $1,000 from the Pope McLean offerings at the 2016 Keeneland January mixed sale. Consigned to this year's OBS March sale of 2-year-olds, the colt was bought back on a final bid of $190,000.

The co-second-fastest move on the day of :21 came from Hips 216 and 236.

Consigned by de Meric Sales, agent, Hip 216 is a bay filly by The Factor   who is a half sister to Canadian stakes-placed Conquest Soprano. The filly was bred in Florida by Lambholm.

From Double Jak, Hip 236 is a Kentucky-bred son of Sidney's Candy from the extended female family of multiple grade 3 winner Soviet Sojourn, the dam of Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner and sire Indian Charlie. Double Jak bought the colt, bred by Connie Snyder and Richard Snyder, for $3,000 from Legacy Bloodstock at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Although not one of the fastest workers Thursday, a half brother to champion and Preakness Stakes (G1) runner-up Classic Empire breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 3/5. Consigned as Hip 323 by Randy Bradshaw as agent, the Concord Point colt bred in Kentucky by Steven Nicholson and Brandi Nicholson is out of the Cat Thief mare Sambuca Classica. In addition to his Eclipse-winning sibling, the colt is also a half brother to multiple stakes winners Anytime Magic and Uptown Twirl, the latter a 4-year-old filly who was sold at last year's Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $1.075 million.
