Jockey Nik Goodwin won his 1,000th career Thoroughbred race when he rode favorite Saganaga to victory for trainer Gary Scherer in the sixth race at Canterbury Park on June 22.
A Bemidji, Minn. native, Goodwin began his professional riding career in 1993 and won his first race at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba that year. He has also ridden in Southern California and on the East Coast.
"It is very special to do this in Minnesota, my home state," Goodwin said. "I came here first as a little boy on opening day in 1985, so this means a lot to do it here."
Goodwin now rides primarily at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., during the summer and in Florida preparing young horses for sales and racing careers in the winter.
Goodwin's 9,800 mounts have earned more than $16 million in purses. He also has been a successful Quarter Horse rider, having won 106 races at Canterbury.
