The first winner for freshman sire Smiling Tiger , Jacks Masterpiece ran away to a 4 1/2-length score at Pleasanton in his debut June 24.
The 2-year-old colt, trained by William Morey and owned by breeder Martin Bach in partnership with Lynn Gitomer and Daniel Weiner, led the entire way under jockey Juan Hernandez to finish the five furlongs in :58.47.
Standing at Harris Farms in California, Smiling Tiger is a grade 1-winning sprinter by Hold That Tiger. Upon his retirement he stood at Premier Thoroughbreds, but moved to Harris Farms after his first successful breeding season in 2014.
Campaigned by owners Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein, and trained by Jeff Bonde, Smiling Tiger finished in the money in 16 of 20 graded stakes tries. Smiling Tiger’s top achievements on the track included victories in the Ancient Title Stakes (G1), Bing Crosby Stakes (G1), and the Triple Bend Handicap (G1) in 2011. Among his other grade 1 efforts, he placed third in both the 2010 and 2012 editions of the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).
Smiling Tiger, out of the Cahill Road mare Shandra Smiles, has a Tale of the Cat half sister—2013 champion 2-year-old filly She's a Tiger. Smiling Tiger retired with a record of 9-2-8 from 23 starts and earnings of more than $1.4 million.
The 10-year-old stallion stood 2017 for a fee of $4,000.
