Canterbury Park Tweaks September Race Schedule

Description:

On June 14 the Minnesota Racing Commission approved a request by Canterbury Park officials to amend horse racing dates and post times in September, making the final date of the 67-day season Friday, Sept. 15.

Canterbury will add live racing on Thursday, Sept. 14 and drop racing on Saturday, Sept. 16. This request was made in order to accommodate a concert on Sept. 16.

Concert promoter Live Nation and Twin Cities radio station 93X announced jointly today that Prophets of Rage, which combines the sonic firepower of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill, will be performing in the infield of the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack as part of the 93X 20th Anniversary Show.

The MRC also approved the request for 5 p.m. post times on the final two days, Sept. 14 and 15.  The earlier post times will allow for more turf races to be conducted prior to sunset and will also allow for up to 12 races to be run each evening.

The request for these amendments was made after Canterbury Park officials discussed concert logistics with both the Minnesota H.B.P.A., which represents race horse owners and trainers, and the concert promoter and determined a change in dates would be in the best interest of all parties.

In 2016, the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack's infield underwent major renovations that would allow for outdoor concerts and other events to be conducted in the 12-acre area. The Sept. 16 concert will be the first large-scale music event hosted in the renovated infield.

Dates for stakes races originally scheduled for the final two days have been altered. The John Bullit Stakes will be run Sept. 14 instead of Sept. 15.  The Shakopee Juvenile and the Tom Metzen H.B.P.A. Sprint Stakes will now be run one day earlier than originally planned and will be held on closing night, Sept. 15.
