Aldous Snow Gets Third Singspiel Victory

In his 8-year-old debut, Aldous Snow ran down second choice Bullards Alley to win the $125,000 Singspiel Stakes (G3T) over the Woodbine turf for a third time. The victory marked the Theatrical (IRE) gelding's fifth running in the 1 1/2-mile race. 

Part of the Queen's Plate undercard, the Singspiel, for 3-year-olds and up, went off with a field of six. 

Sam-Son Farm's homebred Aldous Snow bided his time near the back and saved ground on the turns, as Reporting Star led the first mile through leisurely fractions of :25.99, :49.98, 1:14.37 and 1:38.38. The pack tightened in the final turn and jockey Eurico Da Silva angled Aldous Snow wide in the stretch, where the pair rallied to get a neck in front of Bullards Alley at the wire. Final time for the distance was 2:27.42.

Pumpkin Rumble had taken the lead around the turn but faded when Bullards Alley got his head in front and had to settle for third.

Trained by Malcolm Pierce, Aldous Snow also won the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Singspiel. In 2016, the gelding had won three times at the allowance level or lower, finishing the year with a sixth-place in the 1 3/4-mile Valedictory Stakes (G3) Dec. 4 on the all weather track at Woodbine. 

"This horse does really well here," said Pierce." I was a little concerned not having a prep race for him, but it all worked out and the turf stayed fairly firm for us so he showed up again today at 8-years old."

The Ontario-bred is out of the winning Quiet American mare Brave Destiny.

The winner paid $14.60, $5.90, and $4.30 across the board, while runner-up Bullards Alley returned $4.40 and $3.40. Pumpkin Rumble paid $4.30 to show.

Race-favorite Reporting Star checked in fourth and winner of the Valedictory, Bangkok finished fifth followed by Curlins Pride.
