Grade 1 winner Time and Motion and the Argentina-bred Dona Bruja will be the ones to beat in the $100,000 Modesty Handicap (G3T) July 8 at Arlington International.
The 1 3/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares 3 and older, which is on the undercard of the featured Arlington Handicap (G3T) for males going the same distance, has drawn a field of eight.
The Jimmy Toner-trained Time and Motion is seeking her first win of the season after finishing sixth in her 4-year-old debut—the April 15 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland—and third in the May 13 Beaugay Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park in her most recent start.
Time and Motion, a homebred for Phillips Racing Partnership, only lost twice in her 2016 season, with her best race coming in Keeneland's 1 1/8-mile Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Lane's End (G1T), where the Tapit filly got a head in front of Harmonize for her first score at the top level.
The Argentinian invader Dona Bruja has only one race under her belt in the United States, but the 5-year-old mare took the Old Forester Mint Julep Handicap (G3T) at Churchill Downs June 10 over odds-on favorite Believe in Bertie.
The daughter of Storm Embrujado, an Argentina-bred son of Bernstein, has won all of her starts in her native country, save for two runner-up finishes. In her last race there, she took the group 1 Copa de Plata-Roberto Vasquez Mansilla-Internacional.
Trained by Ignacio Correas for owner Dom Felipe, Dona Bruja worked a bullet five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 over the main track at Keeneland July 1 to be the best of seven at the distance that day.
Also lining up for the Modesty is Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Daring Duchess, a graded stakes-placed daughter of Arch who was the last out winner of the Keertana Overnight Stakes at Churchill.
Three races later a field of nine will contest the $100,000 Arlington Handicap with another Argentina-bred lined up as one of the top threats to win the race. Wimborne Farm's Kasaqui was made the 9-5 favorite after taking the Wise Dan Stakes (G2T) last out at Churchill Downs June 17.
The 7-year-old son of Lasting Approval, also trained by Correas, placed second in both the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) and Muniz Memorial Handicap (G2T) and then finished fourth in the May 6 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1T) 4 1/2 lengths behind the victorious Divisidero.
Michael Hui's Taghleeb is the second choice at 3-1 morning line. He scored in his 6-year-old debut in the W.L. McKnight Handicap (G3T) in January but has not been able to get to the wire first in three races since. He was runner up to Zhukova in the Man o' War Stakes (G1T) May 13 at Belmont Park, but finished six lengths back.
Also in the Arlington Handicap is the Ramsey-owned Sir Dudley Digges, who comes into the race off two optional-claiming allowance wins over the turf at Churchill Downs; and Olympia Star's Applicator who has not won a race since May of last year and finished eighth last time out in the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (G1T) at Belmont.
