Iram Vargas Diego celebrates his 1,000th win at Lone Star
Jockey Iram Vargas Diego won his 1,000th race in North America July 7, when he guided Mr Lexis to victory in the ninth and final race of the night at Lone Star Park.
Diego positioned Michael Annechino's Mr Lexis in third early on in the 1 1/16-mile turf test for $10,000-$12,500 claimers, shifted to the outside in the stretch, and accelerated to the wire to win by 1 3/4 lengths at 8-1 odds.
It was the second win on the night for Diego, who opened the card with a victory aboard Blingin' Rose.
Diego has earned nearly $15.9 million in purses from 9,202 starts for his clients since 2002. He is currently the leading rider at Lone Star, where he has 54 wins since the meet began April 20.
