Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate stepped up his workout regimen July 8 at Santa Anita Park in preparation for the July 22 TVG San Diego Handicap (G2).
The Bob Baffert-trained Unbridled Song's colt—who went six furlongs in his two prior works—stretched out to seven furlongs early in the morning Saturday to avoid the scorching heat in Arcadia, Calif. He covered the distance in 1:25 3/5.
With workmate Uninvited well ahead early, Arrogate moved closer in the turn and went by in the stretch. Martin Garcia encouraged the gray to run past the wire, a common practice for Baffert-trained runners. He ran fractions of :25 1/5, :49 1/5, and 1:13 2/5, and galloped out to a mile in 1:38 flat.
Baffert said after Arrogate's workout July 2 at Santa Anita that he is planning to ship the colt to Del Mar the weekend of July 15-16.
The San Diego Handicap will serve as Arrogate's race prep for the Aug. 19 TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar. A Pacific Classic triumph would push Arrogate's tally of graded/group 1 wins to five, following wins in the Travers Stakes, Breeders' Cup Classic, Pegasus World Cup Invitational, and Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline. His only loss in eight starts remains his debut in April of 2016, when he ran third despite a troubled trip going six furlongs at Los Alamitos Race Course.
