Hips to Watch: Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale

The Fasig-Tipton July selected yearling sale offers buyers the first opportunity to see yearlings from first-crop sires and one of the top horses to watch at the July 11 sale is a colt sired by Cairo Prince  , the Airdrie Stud stallion whose first crop was foaled in 2016.

Consigned by Brereton C. Jones and Airdrie as Hip 137, the gray or roan colt was produced from a grade 3-placed daughter of Medaglia d'Oro   who is a half sister to grade 3 winner and sire Mr. Livingston.

"He is a beautiful two-turn type colt who has been extremely popular," said Airdrie's Bret Jones. "We always try to bring nice individuals here."

Also on the short list is Hip 18, an Into Mischief   filly from Four Star Sales, agent. Out of the A.P. Indy mare Limbo, the filly is a half sister to two stakes winners from a loaded female family. The filly's second dam is Northernette, a two-time champion daughter of Northern Dancer who is a full sister to the top sire Storm Bird.

"The sire keeps doing more and more all the time and this is a filly in particular that has a little more pedigree than some of the other Into Mischief yearlings at this sale," said Four Star's Kerry Cauthen. "She is maturing coming into this sale."

Richard Forbush's one-horse consignment consists of Hip 143, a chestnut filly by Justin Phillip  , whose first foals are off to a good start as 2-year-olds of this year. The filly descends from the female family of the grade 3-winning Stage Door Johnny mare Kapulua Butterfly.

Also to watch are Hip 198 (Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services), a Proud Citizen colt who is a half brother to grade 1 winner Include Betty; and Hip 120 (Buckland Sales), a Regal Ransom filly out of a stakes winning A.P. Indy mare who has produced grade 1 winner Joking and is a half sister to Fed Biz.
