The last Saturday of the Belmont Park spring/summer meet boasts an interesting feature race July 15 when older turf runners face off in the one-mile Forbidden Apple Stakes for a $150,000 purse.
The “now” horse in the race is Disco Partner, Patricia Generazio’s New York-bred homebred who comes off an impressive score in the Jaipur Invitational Stakes (G3T) June 10 at six furlongs. The 5-year-old took the Elusive Quality Stakes at seven panels two back and has notched five of his seven career wins at Belmont. He is a come-from- behind runner who may well benefit from the eight furlongs.
Offering Plan is another last-out victor, having won the Kingston Stakes over yielding turf at Belmont in May. Also devoid of early speed, Offering Plan is a consistent sort and comes from the turf factory of trainer Chad Brown. Grand Arch is the most accomplished runner in this group, having banked nearly $1.9 million for owners Jim and Susan Hill. He won the grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in 2015 and then ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T) there, but his form went the wrong way last year and the now-8-year-old hasn’t raced since last October.
King Kreesa, another 8-year-old warrior, totes co-highweight of 124 pounds. He set the tempo in the Kingston but was passed close to home by Offering Plan and settled for second. He has eight victories at Belmont and will be an early pace factor.
Mohaymen not only tries turf for the first time, but was also assigned 124 pounds. He has been off form since winning the Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) last year, and his losing margins have consistently increased. This grass could possibly resurrect his career.
Mr Maybe won the John's Call Stakes last summer but hasn’t shown the same turn of foot since. Get Jets leaves from the rail and owns a stakes win two years ago against state-breds in the Sleepy Hollow. He’s been running in allowance optional claiming company and will be tested for class here. Bondurant is looking for his first black-type score and ran a good second to Heart to Heart in the Canadian Turf Stakes (G3T) in March.
Cerise's Prince has speed but just passed the first-level allowance hurdle in his last out. Great Wide Open doesn’t have much to show for his three U.S. starts. Weekend Hideaway was entered for the main track only.
The co-feature is the Rockville Centre Stakes for 2-year-olds foaled in New York State going six furlongs. The headliner in the $100,000 event is Morrison, who ran through the slop June 18 at Belmont to win a maiden allowance race by 17 lengths in his first start. What a Catch also scored in his first outing, winning by 5 1/2 lengths going five furlongs at Belmont in state-bred company.
Morning Breez likewise bested fellow New York-breds first out by daylight. Analyze the Odds won back in April first out but was well-beaten in the Tremont Stakes. He is the most experienced runner in the field. Over Salty and Lake Party were both well-beaten in their initial races in state-bred company.
