Two Grand gets up to win a maiden race at Mountaineer by 3/4 lengths July 18
Woodford Thoroughbreds' freshman sire Soldat had his first winner July 18, when Dwight Preston's Two Grand took a maiden special weight by three-quarters of a length at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.
Two Grand chased the pace in the 4 1/2-furlong event, edging to the lead near the wire to stop the clock in :54.55.
The 2-year-old colt was bred by Cloyce Clark Jr. in Kentucky out of the Elusive Quality mare Gold Lady.
Soldat broke his maiden in the With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course in his third start for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and followed with two seconds: one in the grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park and the other in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G2T) at Churchill Downs.
After romping in an allowance on a sloppy track at Gulfstream Park by 10 3/4 lengths in his 3-year-old debut, the son of War Front went on to win the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). After a fifth place finish in the Florida Derby (G1), he went on to an 11th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).
Soldat only raced twice as a 4-year-old. His career ended because of a suspensory injury early in 2013. He retired with a 4-4-0 record from 12 starts, with earnings of $622,760.
The Florida farm stood the stallion for $5,000 in 2017.
