Mama's Kid draws off to a 17-1 upset at Del Mar

Earlier this month at Los Alamitos Race Course, Mama's Kid reared up and missed the break at the start of her debut in a $50,000 maiden claimer—yet still stormed home to finish second.

The Sal Gonzalez trainee was on a mission July 20 in her second start and broke alertly in California-bred maiden special weight company at Del Mar. She posted a 17-1 upset in the five-furlong test and delivered Richard's Kid   his first win as a sire.

With jockey Juan Ochoa hustling her out of the gate, Mama's Kid led all the way and turned back 7-5 favorite Hold That Smile to extend her lead in the stretch and capture the $60,000 purse with a 3 1/2-length victory. The final time was :59.01.

Mama's Kid, out of the Restless Con mare Mama's Con, was an $11,000 purchase for Tricar Stables out of Mary Knight's consignment to the 2017 Barretts January mixed sale. Just three months earlier, she was a $24,000 RNA at the 2016 Barretts October yearling and horses of racing age auction. Richard's Kid, by Lemon Drop Kid  —Tough Broad, by Broad Brush, began his racing career under conditioner Richard Small before he was transferred to Bob Baffert. He won 12 races, including three grade 1 events, during a 47-race career. He concluded his career under the care of trainer Doug O'Neill, who oversaw his second win in the Cougar II Handicap.

The 12-year-old stallion stands for $2,500 at Magali Farms in California.
