Jockeys Ocampo, Talamo Hospitalized After Spill

Jockeys Israel Ocampo and Joe Talamo were transported to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., following a spill Oct. 19 at Santa Anita Park.

Talamo's X-rays at the hospital came back negative for broken bones and the jockey was diagnosed with a bruised thigh. Ocampo's agent, Tommy Ball, said the rider was diagnosed with a broken thumb at the hospital, but is otherwise uninjured.

The incident occurred during the seventh race Thursday, when Ocampo's mount, Warrenscrystalized, broke down near the wire in the sprint race down the Santa Anita hillside turf course. Talamo's mount, Hawk's Journey, fell over Warrenscrystalized and both jockeys were sent to the turf.

Talamo was able to roll away from the fallen horses soon after, as Hawk's Journey got to her feet and ran off, while Ocampo sat motionless beside Warrenscrystalized for an extended period of time. Warrenscrystalized, a 6-year-old mare, was euthanized due to a severe fracture in one of her front legs.

Ocampo was removed from the turf course restrained and on a backboard and loaded into an ambulance. Talamo was taken off the track on a stretcher, but was sitting upright as paramedics loaded him into a second ambulance.
