Gulfstream Park announced Aug. 13 it will run 23 stakes races, including 12 on turf, worth a total of $1.775 million during this year's first fall turf festival, a 40-day boutique meet presented by Gulfstream at Calder Casino & Race Course.
The meet, which will run from Oct. 8 through Nov. 30, will feature 21 stakes races worth $75,000 and two $100,000 graded stakes. The meet will include three Saturday programs with multiple stakes races. The highlights include:
• The $600,000 Sunshine Millions Preview Day Nov. 8, with eight $75,000 stakes races for Florida-breds including four juvenile stakes and the Millions Classic Preview at 1 1/16 miles;
• The $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-olds and up and the $100,000 My Charmer (gr. IIIT) for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, both at 1 1/8 miles on the turf Nov. 22.
• Juveniles will take center stage Nov. 29, with six $75,000 ranging from six furlongs to a mile on both the main track and turf course.
"We believe the stakes schedule for the first fall turf festival presented by Gulfstream Park will serve as a bridge between the summer and winter meets and benefit local horsemen as well as those shipping to Gulfstream and Palm Meadows for the winter season and championship meet," said Gulfstream vice president of racing P.J. Campo. "Obviously, this will be a new experience for all of us, but we intend to learn from this inaugural meet, get feedback from horsemen and fans, and begin building on what we hope will be a great fall tradition in Thoroughbred racing."
