Iron Fist Heads Asmussen Bunch on Big Zia Stakes Day

Just 20 days after his fifth-place run in the Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Whispering Oaks Farm's Iron Fist is scheduled to be back in action, at the head of a formidable contingent shipping in for trainer Steve Asmussen, in the $150,000 Zia Park Championship Handicap Nov. 22.

Asmussen has five entered for a big stakes day at Zia Park and none are higher than 3-1 on the morning line. Iron Fist, a 5-year-old son of Tapit  and a four-time stakes winner who earned his first graded score in the July 8 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3), is the shortest of the five at 4-5 on the morning line for the 1 1/8-mile dirt test.

Michael Langford's Untrapped and Clearview Stable's Ever So Clever are two other grade 3 winners from the Asmussen barn to ship into New Mexico for Wednesday's races.

Untrapped, who placed in the LeComte Stakes (G3), Risen Star Stakes (G2), Rebel Stakes (G3), Ohio Derby (G3), and Indiana Derby (G3) earlier in the year, broke through for his first graded score last time out in the Sept. 24 Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park. The Trappe Shot  colt is 8-5 on the morning line for the $200,000 Zia Park Derby.

BALAN: Untrapped Gives Asmussen First Oklahoma Derby Win

Ever So Clever also ran at Remington Sept. 24 and the Medaglia d'Oro  filly came in second behind much-the-best champion Champagne Room in the Remington Park Oaks. She earned her grade 3 score in the April 14 Fantasy Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park and is the 2-1 second choice on the morning line in the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks.

The other Asmussen entries on the nine-stakes Zia card (for Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds) are stakes winner Counterforce in the $75,000 Zia Park Sprint and multiple stakes-placed Christina's Comet in the $75,000 Zia Park Distaff.
