Gulfstream Park announced Nov. 30 that December purses for its championship meet, which begins Dec. 2 with the $1.1 million Claiming Crown, will be increased by 10%.
"Business was up in November at Gulfstream Park West, and that gives us the ability to increase purses throughout the month of December at the Championship Meet," said Bill Badgett, general manager of Gulfstream Park. "The championship meet is always special. ... We know fans and horsemen love the Claiming Crown, and with the number of entries and the perfect weather forecasted for South Florida, we can't wait for Saturday."
Gulfstream's 11-race opening day program, which drew 163 entries, will kick off a four-month meet that includes the Dec. 9 Clasico del Caribe, the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 27, and the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) March 31. Gulfstream will also host major events throughout the championship meet, including the 47th annual Eclipse Awards Jan. 25.
