Berry Logs 2,000th Remington Park Victory

After a nearly eight-month wait, it did not take long for jockey Cliff Berry to rack up his 2,000th career Thoroughbred win at Remington Park. The all-time leading rider at the Oklahoma City track reached the milestone on opening night of the 2014 season Aug. 15.
Berry, a native of Jones, Okla. who turns 52 on Aug. 23, rode 1-2 choice He Knows Better to victory in race 4 for owner Young Stables of Oklahoma City. Trained by Bret Calhoun, He Knows Better defeated 11 other Oklahoma-bred maiden 2-year-olds, going five furlongs in :58.90 over a fast track .
A record 15-time winner of the riding title at Remington, Berry won his 1,999th there on the final day of the 2013 season last December. He becomes the first winner of 2,000 races in the track's history. Only two others, Don Pettinger (1,419) and Luis Quinonez (1,161), have topped 1,000.
Overall, Berry has won 4,243 races aboard Thoroughbreds from 26,880 career mounts. He is currently ranked 58th on the all-time wins list for jockeys.
The opening weekend continues Saturday night at Remington Park with the $175,000 Governor’s Cup and the $75,000 David M. Vance Sprint serving as the featured events. The first race Saturday is at 7 p.m. locally.
