Tonalist's 2018 Fee Lowered to $20,000

An exceptionally deep group of sires with their first crop of foals in 2017 caused Lane's End to lower the stud fee for four-time grade 1 winner Tonalist , who will now stand 2018 for $20,000, live foal stands and nurses. The stallion's fee was initially set at his entering-year fee of $30,000.

"Tonalist has had two very good years, having bred over 250 mares," Lane's End's Bill Farish said. "But it being the third year and with a deep bunch of first-year horses this year, we wanted to be sure Tonalist doesn't have a down year. His weanlings sold well and he has a lot going for him, but we always want people to feel like they're getting value."

The 6-year-old son of Tapit —Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony, was represented by his first foals this year, with his highest-priced colt selling for $260,000 and his top filly bringing $175,000. He was among the top 10 leading first-crop weanling sires by average with 15 averaging $89,467 at the Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton November sales, which included seven six-figure weanlings.

Lane's End's David Ingordo said he's been impressed with Tonalist's first foals. 

"They're well-grown, forward, quality foals, with bone, and great structure," he said. 

Raced by Robert S. Evans, Tonalist won or placed in 11 graded stakes. His victories at the highest level came in the 2014 Belmont Stakes (G1), in back-to-back wins in the 2014-15 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1), and in the 2015 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1).
