The Grey Gatsby wins the 2014 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly
Multiple group 1 winner The Grey Gatsby has been retired and will enter stud next year at Haras du Petit Tellier near Sévigny, France.
The 6-year-old son of Mastercraftsman—Marie Vison, by Entrepreneur, was bred in Ireland by Malcolm Parrish and raced by Frank Gillespie. He won at first asking and placed in two group stakes at 2. The Grey Gatsby shined brightest at 3 when he took the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) and QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (G1). That same year he finished second in the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) to Australia, who he defeated in the Irish Champions Stakes in his next start.
The Grey Gatsby will stand for €7,000 (about US$ 8,300) with shares in a syndication being offered at €18,000 (about $21,400) per share, according to Jour de Galop.
"He has been a formidable racehorse, being able to run at group level from 2 to 6 years old. He was a real competitor who fought ... and should produce beautiful foals because he has the physique for that. His strain is classic," Patrick Chedeville, who runs Petite Tellier, told Jour de Galop.
Stakes-placed winner Marie Vison has produced one other winner to date, a half brother to The Grey Gatsby named Dream Land (Oasis Dream). The mare is also a half sister to group-placed winner Saint Thomas (Dansili) and seven other winners.
