Inclement weather in the Dublin, Ireland, area forced Tattersalls Ireland to cancel the Ascot December sale scheduled for Dec. 11. The sale will not be rescheduled.
"Tattersalls Ireland has confirmed that it has not been possible to reschedule the Ascot December sale, which had been due to take place today but was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions," Tattersalls said in a statement.
The Newmarket, England-based sales company said all applicable entry fees would be refunded to vendors who would have the option of transferring horses entered in the sale to either the February sale in Newmarket on Feb. 1-2, 2018, or the next scheduled sale in Ireland March 28.
According to the Irish Times, travel conditions were treacherous due to icy conditions and the temperatures ranged from zero to 6 degrees Celsius.
"Met Éireann has lifted its 'orange' cold weather alert but has cautioned that road conditions are likely to worsen this evening as snow in many parts of the country freezes after nightfall," the newspaper reported. "Temperatures are not expected to rise to above 5 to 6 degrees centigrade in places today with compacted snow and ice making driving hazardous, particularly on minor roads and in the midlands. By noon all main roads were clear but problems remain in some areas leading to bus services from remote towns being cancelled."
