Shackleford Yearling Filly Tops Ohio Sale

Sales was first in Ohio after 10-year hiatus
A yearling daughter of Shackleford was sold to Shane Meyers for $15,000 to top the Dec. 3 Ohio mixed sale at Majestic Farm near Batavia, Ohio.
Bred by and consigned by Michael L. Winings, the filly foaled in Ohio and named Shack's Sweetie is out of the winning Majestic Warrior mare Bumba Bumba, a half sister to multiple stakes-placed $614,960-earner He's So Chic. From the extended female family of grade 2 winner and sire Sightseeing and grade 3 winner and sire With Distinction, Bumba Bumba was purchased by Winings while carrying the Shackleford filly in utero for $7,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
The sale, the first in the Buckeye state after a 10-year hiatus, was conducted by the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners with support from the Ohio Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, according to the OTBO website.
From 93 offered, 61 horses were sold for gross receipts of $153,000, an average price of $2,508. The 32 horses bought back represented an RNA rate of 34.4%. (An earlier version of this story did not break down RNA and wihtdrawn horses).
Second-highest price of $10,000 was paid by Rolf Obrecht and Joe Poole for a Giant Oak yearling colt named Oaks Honey. Consigned by his Ohio breeders Donald Bookman or Linda Friess of Booker Fitz Farm, the colt is out of the three-time winner and $82,855-earner Sweet Tia, a daughter of Borrego. The colt's third dam Tia Juanita is a multiple stakes winner who won 11 races and earned $336,869.
