Description:

Promising 4-year-old Masochistic is the 7-5 morning line favorite for the inaugural Los Alamitos Mile Sept. 6 in a field that also includes a pair of stakes winners at the summer meet at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Sky Kingdom and Soi Phet join Masochistic in a solid lineup of nine for the most lucrative event of the 11-day fall meet at Los Alamitos, which is operated in association with the Los Angeles County Fair. Also in the field is $1.3 million earner Clubhouse Ride.

The eighth of nine races, the Los Alamitos Mile is set for a Saturday post time of 5:30 p.m. PDT at the Orange County track. The program also includes the $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs, and a work between the third and fourth races by dual classic winner California Chrome, who is based at Los Alamitos with trainer Art Sherman.

Trained by A.C. Avila for Los Pollos Hermanos Racing and Santa Ines Stable, Masochistic has won his past three starts by a combined 21 lengths after finishing off the board in his March 15 debut at Santa Anita Park.

The Mile will mark the 4-year-old Sought After gelding’s first attempt beyond seven furlongs, and his initial appearance in a stakes event.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Westrock Stables, Sky Kingdom won the American Flag Stakes July 4 in his Los Alamitos debut, some 24 hours after Soi Phet captured the opening-day Bertrando Stakes.

A 5-year-old son of Empire Maker, Sky Kingdom, who was a distant second behind Irish Surf in the 1 1/2-mile Cougar Handicap (gr. III) July 25 at Del Mar, and will be shortening up to a distance much more to his liking. Sky Kingdom has won five of 15 and earned $307,872.

Owned by a partnership that includes Gerald and Sandra Benowitz, Mathilde Powell, and Paul Viskovich and trained by Leonard Powell, Soi Phet was dominant against fellow California-breds in the Bertrando, winning the mile event by 3 3/4 lengths at 11-1 odds.

Away since finishing seventh of nine in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) July 26 at Del Mar, the 6-year-old Tizbud   gelding has seven wins in 28 starts, including six in 12 races since being claimed for $16,000 by his current connections more than 15 months ago at Hollywood Park. Soi Phet has banked $352,686.

In terms of money, Clubhouse Ride is easily the most accomplished of the Mile entrants.

Owned by Six-S Racing Stable and Nikolas Petralia and trained by Craig Lewis, the 6-year-old Candy Ride horse has won just five of 39 lifetime starts but has 19 placings, often in top-level Southern California events.

Clubhouse Ride has produced victories in consecutive runnings of the Californian Stakes (gr. II), including the May 31 renewal at Santa Anita. In his most recent start, however, Clubhouse Ride was eased in the $1 million Pacific Classic (gr. I) on Polytrack at Del Mar.

Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, coming off his first training title at Del Mar, has entered a pair in graded stakes-placed Tonito M., a group winner in Puerto Rico, and Kate's Event.
