Vicar’s in Trouble paired his victory this spring in the $1-million Louisiana Derby with a win in the $400,000 Super Derby on Saturday at Louisiana Downs to capture arguably the two biggest races on the Louisiana racing calendar.
While the Fair Grounds Oaks has been a tremendous springboard for 3-year-old fillies over the last decade, the Louisiana Derby and Super Derby are the marquee races in the Bayou for 3-year-olds. Vicar’s in Trouble in 2014 became the first horse to ever complete the Louisiana Derby-Super Derby double.
Something about Louisiana seems to bring out the best in Vicar’s in Trouble. He’s won four of his five starts in the state, including his only other stakes win in the 2014 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Trained by Mike Maker for owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Vicar’s in Trouble pressed the pace in the Super Derby through a half-mile in :47.88. He put away early leader Ide Be Cool in the stretch and left the rest of the 11-horse field reeling in his wake. Vicar’s in Trouble coasted to a 7 ¼-length romp under Rosie Napravnik, who also was aboard for his two other stakes wins.
Vicar’s in Trouble completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.38 to move past the seven-figure plateau in career earnings with a lifetime bankroll of $1,128,900.
The Ramseys purchased Vicar’s in Trouble for $80,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training. He is from the second crop of Grade 1 winner Into Mischief.
