Trainer Mark Casse scratched morning line favorite Conquest Typhoon from the $128,647 Swynford Stakes Sept. 7, but won the race for a third straight time anyway when Conquest Boogaloo came from behind on the Woodbine Polytrack.
Patrick Husbands guided the son of Scat Daddy to victory for Conquest Stables, which also owns Conquest Typhoon. Conquest Boogaloo, the 2-1 second choice, defeated four other 2-year-olds while completing the seven-furlong distance in 1:23.97.
Conquest Boogaloo broke slowly and lagged at the rear of the small, closely bunched group, following 4-5 favorite Glenville Gardens into the stretch after being wide around the turn. As Glenville Gardens, a first-time starter ridden by Luis Contreras, overtook pacesetter Honkeytonk Man past the furlong marker, Conquest Boogaloo made his bid on the outside. Conquest Boogaloo quickly got the advantage and surged clear to win by two lengths under a hand ride.
Melnyk Racing Stable homebred Glenville Gardens ran well in his debut for trainer Josie Carroll but was second best. Honkeytonk Man, who posted early fractions of :24.25 and :47.50 before yielding in the stretch, finished third, 1 1/2 lengths behind the runner-up. Less Than Perfect and George McFly trailed.
Casse and Conquest Stables won last year's Swynford with Conquest Titan and Casse also won the race in 2012 with John Oxley's Uncaptured, who went on to earn a Sovereign Award as Canada's outstanding 2-year-old male. Casse has won the Swynford a record six times.
Conquest Boogaloo has been broken slowly in all three of his starts, but as he did Sunday he was able to overcome it in breaking his maiden in his prior start Aug. 10 at Woodbine. He was a well-beaten sixth in his debut June 29, also at Woodbine.
"He’s a horse that leaves the gate slow," said Husbands. "Once we got in the clear, I knew he would run them down. He’s a nice little horse, but he wants to go further."
James Everatt, Janeane Everatt, Arika Everatt-Meeuse, and Tim Meeuse bred Conquest Boogaloo out of the stakes-placed Jules mare Jules Best. The dark bay or brown colt was purchased by his owner for $190,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale last year when consigned by the Taylor Made Sales Agency.
Extending his earnings to $119,765, Conquest Boogaloo paid $6.90 and $2.80 while shouldering top weight of 118 pounds. Glenville Gardens returned $2.80 and rounded out a $14.40 exacta. There was no show wagering.
