Loosen Up Stables' Unreachable Star, the all-time money-winning Indiana-bred racehorse with $784,595 in earnings, has been retired at age 10 because of a soft tissue injury in his left front leg.

The popular gelding by Unloosened out of the Stars n' Stripes mare Starsovertheriver began his career in March 2007 at Turfway Park and broke his maiden in his fourth start that year at Indiana Grand Race Course. Thereafter he won seven stakes, finished second in seven stakes, and third in five stakes, all of them for Indiana-bred runners.

Unreachable Star, trained by Tim Glyshaw his entire career, was voted 2009 Indiana Horse of the Year for winning five of 10 starts, two of them stakes, and from 2009-12 was named Indiana-sired older horse of the year. He won the William Henry Harrison Stakes at Indiana Grand three times.

Unreachable Star made 64 starts with 17 wins, 11 seconds, and nine thirds.

"Unreachable Star gets a lot of credit for making my career," Glyshaw said Sept. 9. "Of course, we are all disappointed that we won't be able to finish out this season, but we really can't be anything but grateful for being able to have such a special horse in our lives. This horse has been with me as long as my wife and I have been married, and as long as we have worked together.

"Natalie and I think of 'Starman' as a member of our family. He has been so honest, so consistent, and he's just such a fun horse to be around. We are going to miss his face."

One of the highlights for the partnership came in November 2009 when Unreachable Star won an open allowance race at Churchill Downs. Owner and partnership manager David Osborne, a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, said the partners were blessed.

"Blessed for what he has accomplished, for the joy he has given us, for his legacy and significance to the Indiana racing program, for his courage and love of the game, and finally, we feel blessed that he will be able to live out the rest of his life with us," Osborne said.

Unreachable Star was bred by Dr. Crystal Chapple. He won at distances from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and was a multiple winner on the grass.
