New York-Bred Turf Stars Set for Sunday

Top New York-bred turf runners will have the Belmont Park stage Sept. 14 in the $125,000 Ashley T. Cole Stakes and the $125,000 John Hettinger Stakes.
In the Ashley T. Cole, grade I-placed King Kreesa will try to secure his second straight stakes win against state-breds when he starts from the outside post in the 1 1/8-mile inner turf race for 3-year-olds and older. The 5-year-old son of King Cugat enters off a head victory over Lubash in the West Point Stakes Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course.
In his past three starts in stakes for New York-breds dating back to June 1, 2013, Gerald and Susan Kresa's King Kreesa has secured three victories, a stretch during which he also won the 2013 Poker Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont.
In Sunday's race, Aliyu Ben J Stables' Lubash as well as the third-place finisher from the West Point, Repole Stable's Notacatbutallama, will take another shot at King Kreesa.
In the John Hettinger, William Punk and Philip DiLeo's Selenite will aim for a second straight stakes win against New York-breds after posting a clear victory in the Aug. 4 New York Stallion Series Stakes at Saratoga. The 3-year-old daughter of Cosmonaut has won half of her six career turf starts.
