America’s Best Racing and DerbyJackpot team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.
Each week, one of our crack handicappers - Jose Contreras, Dan Tordjman, Victoria Garofalo or Cory Moelis – will provide at least one “Best Bet” of the weekend, ideal for a win bet (Monkey Bet on DerbyJackpot).
The post also will include some combination of additional bets for the weekend.
For some posts, our handicappers will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet (a top-three finish or “The Granny” on DerbyJackpot).
Our handicappers also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend (a Gonzo Bet on DerbyJackpot) or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity to bet a trifecta (The Fiddy on DerbyJackpot) or superfecta (The Dime Bet on DerbyJackpot).
Place your bets at DerbyJackpot. Races open for betting about five minutes before post time. It’s fun, it’s easy, and you can walk away with some extra cash in your pocket.

This Weekend’s Bets
Saturday
Best Bet (Win Bet/ Monkey Bet)
Belmont Park, Race 2, Post Time 1:36 p.m. ET
#4 Cali Star: This filly has been favored her last three starts but has not gotten the job done. I think this one-turn mile distance will be to her liking. I expect her to be closer to the speed today, and hopefully she gets a clear trip. Since she’s disappointed in previous efforts, I’m hoping bettors give up on her and we get fair odds on her at post time.
Exacta Box (Gonzo Bet)
Belmont Park, Race 7, Post Time 4:13 p.m. ET
Grade 3 Noble Damsel Stakes
#1 Byrama: She’s a previous Grade 1 winner, and I’m hoping her class will show up against this group. Four of her five lifetime wins have been on the turf. Her trainer does well with this type of moves.
#3 Devilish Love: She has turned into a true professional in 2014. She’s a perfect 3-for-3 this year on the turf at this distance of one mile. I like that she already has a victory at this track. She’s stepping up in class, but she looks to be improving at the right time.
#4 Love Train: This is another one that has improved in 2014. She’s a perfect 2-for-2 on the year with this same jockey aboard. Both of those wins have been here at Belmont Park.
#8 Julie’s Love: She is making her second start of the year after taking a break since April. She’s posted two wins on turf at Belmont and shows a steady set of workouts leading up to this race. She might be overlooked on the toteboard and her odds might be worth a bet.
Sunday
Best Bet (Win Bet/ Monkey Bet)
Los Alamitos, Race 6, 7:30 p.m. ET
#10 Day of Fury: She was bet to favoritism in both of her career starts in January but failed to deliver a win. She’s been stabled locally and has trained steadily for her comeback. I like the early speed she showed going farther, and Day of Fury should appreciate today’s shorter distance.
Exacta Box (Gonzo Bet)
Los Alamitos, Race 7, 8 p.m. ET
#3 Ore Pass: Arrives from Indiana Downs, where he failed to win as the favorite in a tougher event. He’s in the hands of a sharp trainer and has a steady set of workouts going in to this race. He will be competitive if he can regain some of his 2013 form.
#5 Cloud Hopper: This 5-year-old gelding has been on a break since May. I like that he’s been training locally and seems to like the track. I expect a speed duel up front, and I think this guy will benefit by closing from the middle of the pack.
#6 Memphis: His best efforts have been on the dirt. He’s faced much tougher competition in his career and can be competitive if he repeats some of his previous efforts. His odds should be very rewarding.
#8 Half Dome Dude: He missed a win by a nose on this track during the July meet. He’s another one that seems to prefer the dirt and likes to sit behind the speed. I like his outside post and expect him to fire a big effort.
