Where Are They Now: 2014 Kentucky Derby Contenders

Racing fans are gearing up for the stretch drive to the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victor California Chrome is targeting the $5-million Breeders' Cup Classic.
With Chrome's much-anticipated return scheduled for Sept. 20 at Parx Racing in the Pennsylvania Derby, America's Best Racing's brand ambassadors took some time to catch up with the field for the first jewel of racing's Triple Crown. 
Below are the horses in order of finish the 2014 Kentucky Derby:
Name: California Chrome

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 1st
2014 record: 6 starts, 5 wins, 0 seconds, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $3,317,800
Where he is now: California Chrome is at Los Alamitos preparing for his next start in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20. He had a six-furlong workout between the races on Sept. 6 and will have one final pre-Pennsylvania Derby workout on Sept. 13.
 
Name: Commanding Curve

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 2nd
2014 record: 6 starts, 0 wins, 1 second, 1 third
2014 earnings: $534,000
Where he is now: After coming in second as an impressive longshot at 37.80-to-1 odds, Commanding Curve went on to compete in the 2014 Belmont Stakes and finished ninth. Commanding Curve subsequently was fourth in the Jim Dandy Stakes in July and ninth in the Travers Stakes in August. It recently was announced that he is taking the rest of the year off due to an injury.
 
Name: Danza

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 3rd
2014 record: 3 starts, 1 win, 0 seconds, 2 thirds
2014 earnings: $804,428
Where he is now: After an unsatisfactory workout before the Belmont Stakes, Danza was sent to Payton Training Center in Ocala, Fla. where he spent the summer taking a break. He put in his first official workout since returning to trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn at Belmont Park when he breezed four furlongs in :49.43 on Sept. 8.
 
Name: Wicked Strong

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 4th
2014 record: 7 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $1,361,610
Where he is now: In late August, Wicked Strong finished second by a nose to stablemate V. E. Day in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens says he doesn’t have firm plans for Wicked Strong’s next race, although the $1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup on the Sept. 27 Super Saturday card at Belmont Park could be a fit.
 
Name: Samraat

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 5th
2014 record: 5 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $745,000
Where he is now: After finishing sixth in the Belmont Stakes, Samraat sustained an injury in July that will cost him the remainder of 2014. The injury is not career threatening, however, and his connections are planning on returning him to the races in 2015.
 
Name: Dance With Fate

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 6th
2014 record: 4 starts, 2 wins, 1 seconds, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $524,800
Where he is now: After the Kentucky Derby, Dance With Fate was entered to run in the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes on July 5 but was scratched shortly before the race. Unfortunately, Dance With Fate suffered a life-ending injury later that month.
 
Name: Ride On Curlin

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 7th
2014 record: 7 starts, 1 win, 2 seconds, 2 thirds
2014 earnings: $623,600
Where he is now: After finishing second in the Preakness Stakes, Ride On Curlin, was eased at the quarter-pole in the Belmont Stakes by jockey Johnny Velazquez. Ride On Curlin was given a break after the Triple Crown trail and is expected to return later this fall.
 
Name: Medal Count

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 8th
2014 record: 8 starts, 2 wins, 2 second, 1 third
2014 earnings: $448,650
Where he is now: After the Kentucky Derby, Medal Count finished third in the Belmont Stakes and ninth in the Haskell Invitational Stakes. Medal Count’s preferred surface might actually be turf, and he finished second in the Dueling Grounds Derby on the grass at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 6.
 
Name: Chitu

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 9th
2014 record: 3 starts: 1 win, 1 second, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $440,000
Where he is now: After capturing the Sunland Derby and finishing ninth in the Kentucky Derby, Chitu has not raced. The colt returned to the workout tab in early August and has been working steadily since then, but his next target has not been announced.
 
Name: We Miss Artie

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 10th
2014 record: 6 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $431,843
Where he is now: Following the Kentucky Derby, We Miss Artie went on to win the Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine in June. He subsequently came in fourth in the Queen's Plate Stakes in July. We Miss Artie is currently recuperating at Ramsey Farm after sustaining an injury.
 
Name: General a Rod

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 11th
2014 record: 6 starts, 1 first, 1 second, 1 third
2014 earnings: $365,000
Where he is now: After the Kentucky Derby, the Mike Maker-trained colt finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes and seventh in the Belmont Stakes. He has not raced since the Triple Crown series.
 
Name: Intense Holiday

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 12th
2014 record: 4 starts, 1 win, 1 second, 1 third
2014 earnings: $480,000
Where he is now: Unfortunately, Intense Holiday was euthanized due to laminitis on June 12, 2014.
 
Name: Candy Boy

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 13th
2014 record: 5 starts, 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third
2014 earnings: $490,000
Where he is now: Candy Boy took a short break after finishing 13th in the Kentucky Derby. He returned for the Los Alamitos Derby in early July and finished second behind champion Shared Belief. A month later, he finished second in the West Virginia Derby in a photo finish against Tapiture. He has been consistently working in Southern California in preparation for the Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing on Sept 20.
 
Name: Uncle Sigh

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 14th
2014 record: 4 starts, 0 wins, 2 seconds, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $180,000
Where he is now: After having to be scratched from the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park a month after the Kentucky Derby, it was reported by the Daily Racing Form that Uncle Sigh is skipping the remainder of 2014 due to an injury.

Name: Tapiture

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 15th
2014 record: 6 starts, 3 firsts, 1 second, 0 third
2014 earnings: $873,222
Where he is now: The Tapit colt has won both of his starts since the Kentucky Derby. In June, Tapiture won the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs before beating Candy Boy in a photo finish in the West Virginia Derby on Aug. 2. Tapiture is currently training in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and is scheduled to make his next start in the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20.
 
Name: Harry’s Holiday

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 16th
2014 record: 6 starts, 1 first, 1 second, 1 third
2014 earnings: $152,622
Where he is now: Harry’s Holiday hasn’t raced since the Kentucky Derby. His last published workout was at Churchill Downs on July 29.
 
Name: Vinceremos

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 17th
2014 record: 5 starts, 2 firsts, 1 second, 0 thirds
2014 earnings: $216,866
Where he is now: Vinceremos has not raced since the Kentucky Derby, but after a break he returned to the workout tab on Aug. 12 at Belmont Park. He has worked every week since then with his most recent workout coming at five furlongs in a time of 1:02.40. Trainer Todd Pletcher has not yet said where the colt is headed next.
 
Name: Wildcat Red

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 18th
2014 record: 8 starts, 3 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third
2014 earnings: $785,000
Where he is now: Wildcat Red has been a bit of a traveler since his 18th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He won the Quality Road Stakes in June in Florida, finished third in the Haskell Invitational Stakes in New Jersey on July 27, and checked in fifth in the King’s Bishop Stakes in New York on Aug. 23. Plans for Wildcat Red’s next race have not yet been announced.  

Name: Vicar’s in Trouble

Where he finished in the Kentucky Derby: 19th
2014 record: 7 starts, 3 firsts, 0 seconds, 3 thirds
2014 earnings: $1,100,000
Where he is now: Vicar's in Trouble recently won the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs with jockey Rosie Napravnik aboard, becoming the first horse to win both the Louisiana Derby and Super Derby.
