Two-year-olds got some spotlight on the Irish St. Leger (Ire-I) card Sept. 14 at the Curragh, with the filly Cursory Glance winning the Moyglare Stud Stakes and Gleneagles taking the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes, (both Ire-I).
After capturing the Ladbrokes St. Leger (Eng-I) at Doncaster with
Kingston Hill the previous day, trainer Roger Varian and jockey Andrea Atzeni teamed again for a second top-level victory on the weekend, taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes with Cursory Glance
The Kentucky-bred
Distorted Humor filly held off a challenge by
Lucida to win by a neck while covering seven furlongs in 1:24.80. The win makes her the early favorite for the 2015 One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) at Newmarket.
The 11-8 favorite, Cursory Glance tracked the leaders before Atzeni moved her to lead passing the furlong marker.
Lucida came with a strong run for Kevin Manning but the daughter of
Shamardal just missed overtaking the winner.
Found, a
Galileo filly making her second start after a debut win Aug. 23, raced at the back of the field early before rallying for third, a half-length behind Lucida.
Winner of the Albany Stakes (Eng-II) in June at Royal Ascot and second in the Lowther Stakes (Eng-II) Aug. 21 at York, Cursory Glance has a 3-1-0 record from four lifetime starts. She earned an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) at
Santa Anita Park as the Moyglare Stud Stakes is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, but Varian suggested she is likely done for the season.
Cursory Glance races as a homebred for Merry Fox Stud, which bred her out of the winning Sadler's Wells mare Time Control.
Coolmore and partners' Gleneagles won the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National as the 1-3 favorite. He was settled at the rear of the five runners by Joseph O'Brien and once the English challenger
Dutch Connection hit the front a quarter-mile out, O'Brien got serious with his colt, taking charge entering the final furlong to get the win.
The son of Galileo had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over runner-up
Toscanini, with Dutch Connection another length back in third.
Final time was 1:25.29 for the seven furlongs.
Gleneagles earned his third group victory of the year following triumphs in the Galileo E.B.F. Futurity (Ire-II) Aug. 24 at the Curragh and Japanese Racing Authority Tyros (Ire-III) July 24 at Leopardstown. Overall, he has won four of five starts for trainer Aidan O'Brien.
