Deceptive Vision earned a berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) after taking the $305,250 Canadian Stakes (Can-IIT)  Sept. 14 over the Woodbine turf.

Trained up to the race by Malcolm Pierce, Sam-Son Farm's homebred Deceptive Vision scored the biggest win of her young career when she came from slightly off the pace to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths over 22-1 shot Royal Fury. The winning time with Eurico Rosa Da Silva aboard Deceptive Vision was 1:47.80 for 1 1/8 miles over a turf course rated good.

Pacesetter La Tia weakened late to third in the 10-horse field of fillies and mares. She was followed by Meri Shika, Dance Again, Industrial Policy, Savvy Hester, Skylander Girl, Solid Appeal, and the 3-2 favorite Lexie Lou, who weakened to last after stalking the pace for three-quarters of a mile.

La Tia, ridden by Joel Rosario, posted fractions of :23.68 and :47.21 for the first half mile. She led in the stretch before being overtaken by Deceptive Vision, who was ridden out by Da Silva. Royal Fury, rallying from sixth with John Velazquez aboard, swept past La Tia late by 1 3/4 lengths to secure the second spot.

The Canadian was the first start for Deceptive Vision since July 6 when she was nailed on the wire in the Dance Smartly Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine after trying to take them wire to wire.

In the Canadian, the 4-year-old filly by A.P. Indy showed a new dimension by coming from fifth.

"We spent a lot of time getting this filly to settle," Pierce said. "It’s hard to win these races on the lead all the way. Eurico does a good job for us. He works hard in the mornings and it pays off in the afternoon.”

After winning two of the first three starts in her career, Deceptive Vision went to the sidelines, missing a whole year of racing.

She returned to the races Feb. 22 to take an optional claiming race at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots on the grass before finishing third in the Nassau Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine on May 25. She was then second in the Dance Smartly by a nose to Overheard.

Deceptive Vision now has won four of seven career starts and will be pointed for the Oct. 31 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The Canadian was a "Win and You’re In" race, where the connections will have their entry and starting fees paid for as well as a travel stipend.

Deceptive Vision returned $11.30 to win, $6.90 to place, and $4.50 to show. Royal Fury returned $19 to place and $9.70 to show, while La Tia returned $4.80 to show.

The winning Ontario-bred is out of the Canadian champion mare Eye of the Sphynx and is a half sister to 2009 Queen's Plate winner Eye of the Leopard.
