Bayern delivered a powerful performance in the Haskell Invitational Stakes in July, and at his best Bayern is a legitimate threat to dual classic winner California Chrome in the Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday at PARX Racing. (Photo by Eclipse Sportswire)
Saturday’s Grade 2, $1-million Pennsylvania Derby marks the long-awaited return of 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome.
With more than 100 days off since his last race, all eyes will be on Chrome to see if he will have a successful comeback or if he will be defeated. We all know the quality and capabilities of California Chrome and what makes him the standout favorite in this race, so let's take a look at his greatest competition from the field of eight:
At 7-2 odds on the morning line, Bayern is the second choice. As it is for California Chrome, the Pennsylvania Derby is somewhat of a second chance race to showcase his skill after finishing a disappointing 10th in last month’s running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. His speed, along with racing at a shorter distance of 1 1/8 miles could the right combination for him to come away with the win or at least to give Chrome some heat.
Tapiture and jockey Rosie Napravnik are coming off of back-to-back stakes wins in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs in June and, most recently, the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby. Tapiture is maturing nicely, and I would find it surprising if he doesn’t make a strong appearance on Saturday.
Protonico and Classic Giacnroll are the only two horses in the field who have previous experience running on the main track at Parx Racing.
Protonico, who has been showing progress, won by a half-length over Classic Giacnroll in the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx earlier this month. At 15-1 odds, Classic Giacnroll probably is not going to finish first, but it would not hurt to add him in your exotic bets to make some money.
Betting on a race with such a heavy favorite like California Chrome may not return the largest payout, but here are a few ways to bet the Pennsylvania Derby on a budget. Make sure to watch the livestream of Chrome’s highly anticipated return right here at www.americasbestracing.net on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET!
Betting the Pennsylvania Derby on $20 Budget Using: #4 Bayern, #7 Tapiture, #3 Protonico, #6 Classic Giacnroll
(If you'd like to bet for #1 California Chrome add him into first or second in your bets)
Scenario A: $3 trifecta Box - 3,4,7 = $18
Scenario B: $.50 superfecta part wheel - 1,4,7 with 1,4,3,7 with 3,4,6,7 with 3,4,6,7 = $19
Scenario C: $10 show - 3,6 = $20
Good Luck!
