Unbridled's Note will be seeking his fourth stakes win over the Santa Anita Park downhill turf course as he tops the field of 11 older horses for the Eddie D. Stakes (gr. IIIT) Sept. 26.
Carded at 6 1/2 furlongs on grass, the Eddie D. is the ninth race on opening day of the track's 25-day autumn meet that will be highlighted by the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships Oct. 31-Nov. 1. With 12 entered in the Eddie D., No Silent is on the also-eligible list.
Retired Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, for whom the race is named, will be at the track to present the winning trophy.
A 5-year-old Unbridled's Song horse trained by Steve Asmussen for Mike McCarty, Unbridled's Note won the 2012 Eddie D. and finished third last year. He has been idle since running fourth as the even money favorite down the hill in the Joe Hernandez Stakes on Feb. 23. Corey Nakatani, who has guided him to all three of his wins at Santa Anita, returns in the saddle. Unbridled's Note, who has the ability to be on the lead or just off the early pace, has five wins, three seconds, and four thirds from 18 starts and earnings of $653,267.
Also coming into the race off a lengthy layoff is Ambitious Brew, his most recent start a 1 1/2-length win in the state-bred Sensational Star Stakes down the hillside course Feb. 22, with Brice Blanc aboard. A gelded 4-year-old California-bred by Tizbud , Ambitious Brew is trained by Marty Jones and owned by his breeder, Pamela Ziebarth.
Ambitious Brew has won four races and finished second three times in seven starts and has two bullet works on his recent tab, including a six-furlong move of 1:12 1/5 Sept. 8 at Los Alamitos. Mike Smith, who was aboard for the gelding's first six starts, will ride.
Home Run Kitten, a minor stakes winner at one mile on grass and an impressive maiden special weight winner coming down the hillside turf course in his second start Jan. 11, is coming off a fifth-place finish in the 1 1/8-mile Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) Aug. 31. Trained by David Hoffmans for Tarabilla Farms, Inc., the 3-year-old colt by Kitten's Joy would benefit from a fast early pace. He'll be ridden by Joe Talamo, who has been aboard for all eight of his career starts as Home Run Kitten has three wins, a second, and two thirds, with earnings of $157,800.
Shipping in for his California debut is Loooch Racing Stable Inc.'s Global Power, a three-time stakes winner trained by Tom Amoss. Racing primarily in the East and Midwest, the 6-year-old horse by Pulpit ran ninth Aug. 10 in the Play the King Stakes (Can-IIT) and was a close third two starts back in the grade III, six-furlong turf Jaipur Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.
