Phoenix Thoroughbreds Acquires Pocket Dynamo

Global investment fund Phoenix Thoroughbreds has acquired recent Royal Ascot group 2-placed juvenile Pocket Dynamo and will aim the colt at the new Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in addition to prestigious European races.

"Pocket Dynamo showed brilliance when just missing by a nose in the five-furlong Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot, and we believe he will be perfectly suited to the new Breeders' Cup race for two-year-olds at 5 1/2 furlongs," said Phoenix Thoroughbreds founder Amer Abdulaziz. "The colt will remain with his trainer, Robert Cowell, in England."

A Kentucky-bred son of Dialed In , Pocket Dynamo had been owned by Cowell's longtime client, Thomas W. Morley, after the trainer selected the colt at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Cowell praised the runner after his Norfolk effort that just missed catching the front-running Wesley Ward-trained Shang Shang Shang.

"Wesley Ward's horse is quite useful, and we were giving her weight, so I think we can be very excited about the future. (Pocket Dynamo) is in great form. He is just a ball of fun and he is bright and sparky every morning," Cowell said.

Looking at potential targets prior to the Breeders' Cup, which will be run at Churchill Downs, Cowell said Pocket Dynamo has been entered for the five-furlong, group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York August 24.

"The Molecomb at Goodwood is another race on the agenda and there is also the Prix Morny (at Deauville). His race at Royal Ascot was the quickest of three 2-year-old races over five furlongs, so we can take some credit in that fact," said Cowell, who trains other horses for Phoenix including juvenile colt Favre.

Pocket Dynamo has raced four times to date, winning a five-furlong dash on the Chelmsford all-weather May 3 and following up with a five-furlong victory over Longchamp turf 10 days later. In his debut at Brighton April 24, he finished a close second after dwelling at the start.

Formed in 2017, Phoenix Thoroughbreds is an international racing and breeding investment fund that has purchased more than $50 million in bloodstock while establishing stables in the United States, Europe, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. The fund was founded by Dubai-based businessman Amer Abdulaziz Salman. Phoenix Thoroughbreds' best horses have included the Bob Baffert-trained grade 1 winner Dream Tree, Belmont Stakes (G1) runner-up Gronkowski, and stakes winner Mourinho.
