Champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road will be sidelined for the remainder of 2018, it was announced July 2.
After the Quality Road filly finished off the board for the first time in her career June 9, when she was fifth in the Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, trainer Ralph Nicks reported she will be turned out to recover from bone bruising.
Owners Zoom and Fish Stable, Charlie Spring, and Newtownanner Stud will offer Caledonia Road, the winner of last year's 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), at public auction later this year.
"It will be tough to let her go," said managing partner Luc Paiement. "She was a brilliant 2-year-old with a pedigree to be a much better older filly. She has all the makings of a top broodmare"
Bred by Vesgo Racing Stable out of the Dixie Union mare Come A Callin, Caledonia Road hails from the female family of Stuart Janney III's foundation mare Sunset Service, whose daughters, Vespers and Database, produced grade 1 winner Hymn Book and grade 1-placed Data Link . Zoom & Fish bought the filly for $140,000 from Eaton Sales' consignment to the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
"She is a one-of-a-kind talent and has international appeal," said Nick Sallusto of Sallusto and Albina Bloodstock—which also manages Newtownanner Stud and will be assisting in the sale of Caledonia Road. "It is a privilege to be associated with her."
