It’s a full field of 12 in ultra competitive $1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park this weekend for TVG Super Saturday.
At the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles, the Gold Cup is the 10th race of the day with a 5:50 p.m. ET post time. The winner receives an automatic berth into the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 1.
Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist will have his blinkers taken off and has been working bullets since the Saratoga Race Course meet. He had his best two career races on the Belmont track, and jockey Joel Rosario has been winning at ungodly 30% this meet.
Moreno looks to be dangerous as the probable lone speed in this race; he’ll look to try and lead from start to finish. Biggest downside? He is coming out of post position 11.
V. E. DAY (LEFT) WINS THE TRAVERS STAKES OVER WICKED STRONG
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens has his big two 3-year-olds, V. E. Day and Wicked Strong, who ran 1-2 in the $1-million Travers Stakes on Aug. 23 at Saratoga. They’re both primed once again for big performances, and either one winning would be no surprise, although the slight edge goes to V. E. Day with top jockey Javier Castellano in the irons, riding a 4-race win streak and peaking at just the right time.
New York-bred Zivo had his 5-race winning streak snapped in his last start. He loves Belmont (4 wins) and the pace upfront shuld set up for this big closer to run at ... I’ll be using him underneath to fill out my exactas & trifectas.
Vick’s Picks:
Horses: Wicked Strong (#3), Zivo (#4), Tonalist (#8), V. E. Day (#10), Moreno (#11)
Strategy A: $20 to win on: Tonalist (#8)
Strategy B: $10 exacta box: Tonalist (#8) and Moreno (#11)
Strategy C: $2 trifecta part wheel: Tonalist (#8), Moreno (#11) with Tonalist (#8), Moreno (#11), V. E. Day (#10) with Wicked Strong (#3), Zivo (#4), V. E Day (#10) = $20
May the horse be with you!
