Trainer Jay P. Bernardini reached his career milestone 1,000th winner when his Pride of Wilko won the second race July 3 at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort. The 6-year-old horse, a $15,000 claim by Bernardini in 2015, secured his second win of the year.
Bernardini has sent out 6,354 starters in a 30-year career and his runners have earned more than $10.7 million. He's coming off his best year in 2017 with 88 winners from 471 starts and earnings of $1,011,989. At Mountaineer, Bernardini has saddled 355 winners.
Bernardini has trained three stakes winners: multiple stakes winners Navy Nurse and Nana's Toy, and 2016 added-money winner Danly's Dream.
