Fire Away, a 6-year-old son of War Front whose three stakes wins include an off-the-turf edition of the May 19 Dixie Stakes (G3) at Pimlico Race Course, lit up the Fasig-Tipton Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale bid board July 9, selling to Joseph Brocklebank for $450,000.
Consigned by Claiborne Farm, Fire Away has a record of seven wins and eight placings from 23 starts, with earnings of $613,397 for owner-breeder Phipps Stable. Produced from the multiple graded-placed Unbridled mare Salute, the horse is a half brother to grade 1-winning millionaire Mr Speaker.
Brocklebank said the horse is destined for stud in South Africa.
"He is going to stand in South Africa in Cape Town," the agent said. "It could be one of three or four farms. He has a huge pedigree. He is a very attractive horse. He's very much like his father War Front. To be honest I thought he would go for a little bit more. I'm very happy that we got him for $450,000. The (market) here is strong for these kind of horses. I'm sure there are some good buys here and some good yearlings tomorrow."
