Phil Hager, who has been responsible for bloodstock services, stallions and sales recruitment at Crestwood Farm since January 2011, is leaving to establish Taproot Bloodstock, a full service bloodstock agency in Lexington.
"The McLeans are very hands-on with the horses, they have sound business minds, and above all they are great influences as people," Hager said. "I am very proud of what we have accomplished as a team over the last eight years, and I am truly pleased to have Crestwood's blessing as I launch this new venture."
Hager is a third-generation horseman who grew up working for his family's Idle Hour Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He bred his first stakes winner at age 17, and has been responsible for breeding and buying many others since. In addition to his time at Crestwood, he has worked hands-on for some top industry professionals, such as Bill Mott, David Ingordo, Gainesway Farm, Fasig-Tipton, Chris Cahill DVM CVA, Eaton Sales, and others.
"Phil joined Crestwood Farm having been raised in the industry by a good horse family, with a strong endorsement from his then-current employer, David Ingordo," said Pope McLean Jr. "Phil's passion for the game enabled him to quickly contribute, helping us land and sell seasons for the likes of Grade 1 winners GET STORMY, TEXAS RED, and other Crestwood Stallions. All the while, Phil steadily sharpened his eye, helping Crestwood purchase multiple graded stakes winners for our racing clients. Phil's ability and integrity have enabled him to steadily build his bloodstock business--routinely working with some of the biggest operations in our industry-- while simultaneously keeping close the interests and confidence of his clients."
Hager lives in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife Lana, whom he met when they were both getting their business degrees at the University of Kentucky. He will continue to provide services to Crestwood Farm but will take a step back from the day-to-day operations at the farm so that he can contribute more time to Taproot Bloodstock.
